Talented Graphic Designer must Focus

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

I met with an extremely talented graphic desinger last week.   She shared her vision  for her work which was truly inspiring.  She wants to design for unique, lifestyle products and present them graphically with beautiful logos and designs.  But, she tells me she is also trying to launch  a branding collaborative that is seeking larger, more national clients.  Sadly, she said, neither business is going anywhere.  This is not surprising.  She must choose to focus on one business or the other; her graphic design  business or the branding collaborative.   If she does not focus on just one, most likely neither enterprise will thrive.  This is not a character flaw; it is simply that there is not enough time to give two businesses the attention and care they need to grow and develop.  We cannot divide our efforts and find financial success.   You can do two things sequentially, but not simultaneously and expect success.   A choice must be made.  Choose the one for which you have talent, passion and that has the best financial outlook.

Fabric Designer gets Business Savvy

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Last week I met with a fabric/textile designer who is using her talents to make fabulous fabric that can be used for clothing or exclusive lingerie.  I am helping her cost her fabric and her garments so that she can put together a price list and thereby approach boutiques to purchase her art-wear.  The goal is to structure her offerings so that buyers understand how to purchase her work.  And, so that she can make enough money to support herself.  She is adding a business mind set to her artistic talent, a combination that will help her become a financially successful creative entrepreneur.

Hello Creative Entrepreneurs

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Many creative entrepreneurs have no idea how to turn the art they love to do into a livelihood. They work very hard but they cannot find the right formula for success. The problem is that no matter how hard you work you cannot work enough hours or charge enough money per job to create a viable enterprise that makes you a good living unless you find a way to break into the “big time.” (more…)
